BayWa r.e. has been granted planning permission to develop Kilderry Solar Farm, located south of Johnswell village, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland. Spanning over 45 hectares, the solar farm is set to contribute to Ireland's renewable energy targets, generating enough clean electricity to power up to 7,400 homes.
This project supports the Irish Government's goal of achieving 80% renewable electricity by 2030. The planning approval is granted for a period of 40 years, after which the site will be fully decommissioned, and the land restored to its original condition.
Declan Cullinane, Country Manager at BayWa r.e. Ireland Ltd., commented:
"We are thrilled to receive planning approval for the Kilderry Solar Farm, which will play a key role in supporting Ireland's transition to a low-carbon future. The development of solar farms like Kilderry will enhance Ireland's energy security by reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels. By tapping into abundant local renewable resources, we can ensure a more resilient and sustainable energy system for the future."
Construction of the solar farm is expected to begin in 2026, with an estimated build time of 12 months. Upon completion, the project will provide substantial annual contributions to the surrounding communities through a Community Benefit Fund. This Fund will support a variety of local initiatives, including energy upgrades (retrofits) for homes, restoration work on local buildings, and the refurbishment of sports grounds etc.
Mike O’Keeffe, Project Manager at BayWa r.e. Ireland Ltd., added:
"In addition to this project generating clean, renewable energy for thousands of homes, we're fully committed to ensuring Kilderry Solar Farm adds real value for the surrounding community. We will work closely with local communities to ensure the Community Benefit Fund is tailored to support the specific needs of the surrounding local areas."
In addition to its energy contributions, the Kilderry Solar Farm has been designed with ecological enhancements in mind. The project includes plans for additional hedgerow planting, grassland improvements, and the introduction of wildflowers to support wildlife habitats and improve soil health, resulting in a biodiversity net gain for the area.
BayWa r.e. is proud to align with Ireland's Climate Action Plan, playing a pivotal role in the national shift towards a greener future while delivering direct benefits to local communities.
